Finally… The Video

At the end of my overseas trip I spent a week winding down in the peaceful surf town of Noosa, Australia. At that point I had over 5000 photographs and two hundred video clips, and I knew people would want to see them. So I took some time to put together a montage of photos and video clips, set to music, to tell the story without an endless stack of photos.

Two weeks ago I reported a laptop disaster in which I thought I lost them all. I was most upset about losing the video. It captures the feeling of the trip pretty well, and losing it was like losing a bunch of awesome memories.

If you hadn’t heard, I did manage to recover all the data, and a week later my laptop mysteriously emerged from its coma and started working again.

So the video is finally online.

It’s about fifteen minutes long, and takes you through my experiences in three beautiful countries: Thailand, New Zealand and Australia. I promise it’s worth your while.

It is embedded below, but I highly recommend watching it here instead, where the screen is bigger. If you have a slower internet connection it might be worth pausing it and doing something in another browser tab while it loads.

Enjoy. And make sure your sound is on.

David,
What a treat for my senses..wow….
I was doing fine–my heart was soaking it all in, so happy for you.. until I got to the end, and Bob Dylan’s “Knockin on Heaven’s Door” is my absolute favorite song, and I lost it..tears…..now I Know what you felt out there..the people, the adventure, the sky, the water, the colors, Nature in all of its glory…because each and every sail I play this song as I revel in a few moments on deck soaking it all in..It’s the best part of life..you opened your heart to new, to experience with your senses, to leaping into the unknown..you not only conquered but you analyzed fear, you allowed yourself to experience grandiose, breathtaking beauty and all that came with it. No wonder you can’t ‘settle’ David..your heart has been blasted open and your senses captivated by that which “every day people” have no idea exists…Amazing for you..thank you for sharing..
And I love “Heart of Gold” but shoot, Bob Dylan with your sunsets and water and kangaroos and surfing..heaven’s door indeed…

David July 15, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Yeah part with the kangaroo on the path always gets me.

I will make a video like this for each trip I take. There will be many.

Joy July 15, 2010 at 8:45 am

Big Sis July 15, 2010 at 11:24 am

Love it! It gave me goosebumps. My favorite part was the banana pancake :)

David July 15, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I forgot you hadn’t seen this yet! I still have to show you my pictures.

I would kill for a banana pancake right about now. It’s almost worth booking a flight just to eat street pancakes and drink Chang

Beautiful, David. Simply beautiful. I’m so glad you had this amazing experience, and even more glad that you shared it with us. Thank you for being so awesome!

And great job with the soundtrack, too! :)

David July 15, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Thanks Jay. I knew you’d dig the soundtrack. The songs are all originals that I composed and recorded on the plane ride home.

Meg July 15, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Oh, David, that was AWEsome! Exclamation marks required!!!! Yay, for you! I recognized some of the shots from DGK. Seeing the kiwi trees (are they trees?) was amazing. Do you stand up to pick kiwis or crawl through those alleys? It’s hard to tell how high or low the fruit hangs.

You didn’t put them in the video, but I’ll never forget the beauty of those flowers you photographed in Thailand. Wow. What a treat this has been to *travel* with you this year and now see this wonderful video. All the best to you and thanks so much for sharing this.

David July 16, 2010 at 3:44 pm

They kiwis actually grow on vines. There is a grid of wires slung about six feet off the ground, and the vines rise up between the rows and spread out along the wires. Quite often the kiwis hang about nose-height, and I’d have to find a hole for my head to sit and then run along the vines with my hands without moving my body. There is a lot of ducking, reaching and bending. Not good for bad backs.

Wow must of been great. Great video it made my day with the music and the pictures. Beautiful!!

Brad July 18, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Looks like a blast! Was that your hand feeding the kangaroo?

And what a photo of a that sunset!

I watched against the background of some White Denim songs, which still seemed to go pretty well with the video (Transparency, Heart From Us All, You Can’t Say).

David July 19, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Yes I was the feeder of the kangaroo. That was at Steve Irwin’s zoo. The kangaroo enclosure was like a big park you could walk through and feed or pet the kangaroos.

Roger July 18, 2010 at 6:29 pm

David,

It looks like the trip of a lifetime. Congratulations on it and your great blog. You deserve it!!

David July 19, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Hey thanks, good to hear from you Roger. I will never forget it.

Thanks a million for such a wonderful video. How great to be able to enjoy the sights and sounds in actual person. One day I will make it there myself. And to think we have more videos to follow of future travels, awesome! Thanks again!

David July 19, 2010 at 4:44 pm

It was actually really easy and fun to make the video. I spent a lot of time on it, but it wasn’t work. I’d love to do another.

Sarah July 21, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Hey David

I think its funny how a Canadian, who lived in New Zealand and visited Australia helped an actual Australian remember why she loves living here. Did-that-make-sense? it’s lovely seeing your country through someone else’s eyes, it makes you appreciate its beauty.

Tony July 30, 2010 at 8:52 am

Very, very nice video. And trust the Brits to look like nutters…;) I have been to Thailand and loved it. I’ve never been to NZ or Oz. NZ looks truly awesome and I’d love to hike and backpack there. Looks like you had a great time – I hope you don’t come back down to Earth with too much of a bump!

David- I literally ‘stumbled upon’ this video and was overcome with a sense of joy. I recently just returned from studying abroad in Australia and I can honestly say it was one of the best times of my life. Lately I have been having trouble coming to peace with the fact that I am no longer there, but this video was perfect. I felt like it documented my experience in a sense! lol The jams were perfect too. Thanks for taking the time to put together such a great video. If there is one thing I miss it is most definetly the amazing ocean, the breathtaking views, and meeting the culturally rich, hostel staying, traveling 20-somethings from all around the world. What a blessing experiences such as these can truly be!

David September 14, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Other readers and friends of mine have said they were affected by it too, all of them travelers. I plan to make one of these for every major trip I take, and there will be many.

David- I’ve just spent the past few hours reading your blog, I don’t even know how I stumbled onto it, but I’m glad I did. I came back to Canada in September after a 10month trip that took me to Thailand, New Zealand and Australia, (as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Bali and Tonga) your video was awesome and brought back so many memories from all of those places, (and made me wish I had of taken video of the Tongariro Crossing).

Since being back I’ve struggled with the never ending drama of what to do with myself. I’m still trying to figure it out. Your blog is inspiring. Thank you.
