Your eyes needed

Ok, the site’s new facelift is live. There are still some bugs, but I didn’t want Raptitude to be offline any longer, so I’m putting it up now. There are a few weird things going on with formatting, and I’m still testing stuff. One problem you’ll notice on some older posts is the “R” signature has a big white block around it, which I never noticed before because the old background was white. I’ll have to go through all 200 posts and delete them manually because they are part of the content.

In the mean time I could use your help though. Please enjoy the site as normal but drop me an email about any bugs you find: graphics out of place, formatting problems, or whatever, and I’ll have them taken care of.

Thanks for your patience, I hope you like the cleaner look. Two years ago I just threw together the site in the stock Thesis theme which is really dull and common, and it’s been bothering me ever since. It’s all about the content anyway but I’m glad to have a simpler and saner design. Thanks to rtcamp for their endless patience with me, and thank you for reading.

-David

I like. It’s clean. Sexy. Nice!

If one day I meet you, I want to do a photoshoot of you (see: my photo work)!

David August 8, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Love it. I just bought my first DSLR and I’m suddenly obsessed with photography

sui solitaire August 9, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Ooh! Let me know if you need any tips/help. I used to do professional work for a while. :)

Nalorin August 9, 2011 at 2:41 am

I like the new layout! Congrats on the change :)

There is one spot on your background image, at (277,377)px, that tries to pass as a dirt speck on the monitor and it detracts from reading (for those of us who are neurotic about monitor hygiene).
The one at (789,228) looks less like a dirty spot and therefore detracts less from reading than the aforementioned “speck”.

Nalorin August 9, 2011 at 2:43 am

Wow. I went to reply to sui’s post, then changed my mind and replied a the end of the page, and it somehow ended up under sui’s post anyway… weird.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:19 am

It is a paper-textured background, so there are some dark fibres in it here or there. I like them :)

Lucy August 8, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Just wanted to point out a little glitch — the links are white on a pale background and a little hard to see — I saw this on “How to Make Trillions…”

David August 8, 2011 at 10:19 pm

I’m not sure where you’re looking at. All links should be black and turn red when you hover over. Where on the page do you see this?

Mannan Khan August 8, 2011 at 9:43 pm

It’s cleaner! I like the old logo!

Ceci August 8, 2011 at 10:02 pm

very nice! :)

Tobi August 9, 2011 at 12:18 am

Huge improvement, I like it though it is still a little dull. But I have to say, I LOVE the picture of you on the side! Very nice, you are one good looking guy.

Kylie August 9, 2011 at 2:55 am

Hey David – the site’s facelift looks great: clean and simple, keeps the focus on the content.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:21 am

That’s the idea. I wanted the design to distract less from the content than it was. The two sidebars were too cluttered and I couldn’t stand the stock Thesis style

Antony August 9, 2011 at 4:18 am

On this page,
to the right pane,
under your photo and white block intro,
above the “Subscribe By RSS FEED” link . . .
It says: “Join 0 Subscribers”
Surely there are more than “0” subscribers?
I am not sure how I personally feel about this . . .
. . . reduced to less then nothing . . .

Christina August 9, 2011 at 5:03 am

yes, that confused me too as I am already subscribed by email. Didn’t know whether to subscribe again to this site.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:43 am

There’s no need to re-subscribe, it’s just the subscriber count that’s missing right now

David August 9, 2011 at 6:22 am

That’s super weird, yesterday it said 7358. It may be feedburner acting up (which it does all the time) or it may be the design team in the middle of fixing stuff

WarmSunshine August 9, 2011 at 5:07 am

I love the new look. I liked the old one too but I think this place could use a little color. But then, we’re coming here for the great content you have to offer. Good luck with this new design :)

Char (PSI Tutor:Mentor) August 9, 2011 at 5:31 am

I like it a lot David~ I didn’t think you could par things back more~ the colours and font are high impact. I really like your idea of having the email subscription box and rss choice at the end of the posts.

And that’s a nice photo of you too.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:23 am

There are more new photos on the About page, if you can’t get enough of me :)

Positively Present August 9, 2011 at 6:23 am

Looks awesome, David!!

David August 9, 2011 at 6:24 am

Hey thanks Dani

Crys August 9, 2011 at 6:30 am

Less clutter and a great photo of you. Love it !!
Thanks for the extra effort, it’s appreciated.

Mark Lipski August 9, 2011 at 7:55 am

The “Join 0 Subscribers” kinda jumped out at me. I tried to be the first, but my address was already on the subscribers list! I imagine you have more than “0” subscribers, you must have at least a million by now no David? All my best to you and yes, the upgrade isnice!

Mark Lipski August 9, 2011 at 7:57 am

OK, so I became a new subscriber under my family email address, and that did not show up either. Shucks!

David August 9, 2011 at 6:28 pm

There is no need to resubscribe. Everyone who was subscribed is still subscribed.

Lindsay August 9, 2011 at 8:09 am

I like it! Although I am a big fan of the Thesis theme (and I use it now!) but this is a fresh facelift. Good job – I know this stuff is frustrating for non web-designers and you did well!

Brenda August 9, 2011 at 8:36 am

Congrats on the site changes. I’m missing white space, the over-sized header, and the big sweeping R on the old logo. Pictures are a nice addition.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:29 pm

The big sweeping R was getting on my nerves. The logo was actually done by a different contractor than the rest of the site and I’m not entirely thrilled with it, but I do like it better than the old one.

nrhatch August 9, 2011 at 8:38 am

Looks good. You too!

David August 9, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Haha.. I keep getting emails saying I’m handsome

Meg August 9, 2011 at 8:43 am

Not bad at all! Love the simplicity and your photos. Links and subscriber count look fine from where I’m sitting. Good job.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Thanks Meg. Always good to hear from you

Steve Mays August 9, 2011 at 9:14 am

As spartan and clean as the ideas you share here. Not normally a fan of colors for backgrounds but his works nicely.

David August 9, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Thanks Steve. I may make the background a bit lighter still. I love the paper texture but it’s not quite the right shade

Clearly Composed August 9, 2011 at 9:42 am

It looks great here! Kudos on the new style. It’s very easy on the eyes. :)

Susie August 9, 2011 at 10:07 am

Very clean and easy to read. I appreciate that the point size is large (in case I can’t find my glasses). Haven’t found any glitches. Looks great!

Maria Long August 9, 2011 at 11:41 am

Looks great. I’m sentimental and miss that fanciful raptitude font thingy…Everything else is crisp clean and good lookin’

David August 9, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Thanks Maria. I remember when everybody was in an uproar about the “new” facebook a year or so ago, and now nobody even remembers the old one

Nancy August 9, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Love it, love the new look…great job!

Kevin H August 9, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Very nice choice, David. The new background is much easier on the eyes.

yliharma August 11, 2011 at 8:28 am

Hi David!
I really like the new layout (much cleaner), although I’m not a big fan of colored backgrounds…I find it easier to read “black/dark grey” text on “white/light grey/beige” background…
I don’t know if I’m the only one to have noticed it…however here is my “report” on something a little bit weird.
In the comments section (here :D ), each comment is separated from the next one by sort of a “comic balloon”….but the pointy end of the balloon “refers” to the name of the author of the next comment… I find it’s confusing :D

Kim T. August 13, 2011 at 8:01 pm

Looks great, I like it. I had to laugh at the dirt speck comment because I kept trying to wipe a smudge off my screen. Now that I know what it is it just makes me laugh. :) Keep up the great work!

Sameer August 25, 2011 at 7:13 am
